DBK Custom Swords - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which grip is better, the traditional or twist wrap?
A: The traditional wrap is a longer enduring wrap, and will withstand more use. For aesthetics, it's purely preference. The twist wrap is much more likely to match your scabbard cover, because we can use the same leather for both parts of the sword. Where as the traditional is a leather we custom color. The traditional has more of an authentic, historical flavor, and immediately gives the sword a 'richer & historic' look. We recommend the traditional.

Q: What determines the positioning of the riser(s)?
A: Unless otherwise specified, I position the risers based on how I would like them positioned as if it were my own sword.

Q: What determines the reshaping of the handle?
A: Unless otherwise specified, I shape the handle based on how I would like the grip sized as if it were my own sword.

Q: How long will my grip last?
A: That depends on the use. If it's just going to hang on a wall, then it will last a very, very long time. If you're actually going to use the sword, i.e. swing it around, cut bottles. Then it will eventually wear out and need touched up, or even replaced. But it would require some serious use to reach this point.

Q: What are the biggest differences between the scabbard cover types?
A: The Squire is a one-piece slip on, single seam in the back, and held in position by adhesive. No decoration is applied to the squire, and it is ideal for those looking for simplicity, yet accentuated with color. Usually to match the grip. The Nobleman is a one-piece slip on, single seam in the back, and held in position by adhesive. Three color choice bands are strategically positioned to fit a sword frog, and decor pieces of the customers choice are added to each of the bands. Finally, a little trimming is added (usually my preference as I can generally determine what is required to match the flavor of the complete package). The King is a four-piece slip on, multiple seams, and held in position by adhesive. Three color choice bands are strategically positioned to fit a sword frog, and decor pieces of the customers choice are added to each of the bands. Finally, a little trimming is added (usually my preference as I can generally determine what is required to match the flavor of the complete package). The trimming on the King is a more expensive trim than the Nobleman, as it should be, and gives it that royal look it deserves.

Q: What is the "Custom" scabbard cover option, exactly?
A: This was added as an option because we occasionally receive requests for unique customer designs that require 'custom' work. This option is an excellent choice for those with a desire to create their own. However, only designs we feel we are capable of do we accept, and this is a quoted option that has the ability to go up or down in price before the commission is even completed.

Q: Tell me about your suspension system(s). Can I use them on any sword?
A: After many requests, we came up with our own suspension systems that will fit most swords. We designed two historically accurate suspension systems that not only look great, but work very well. Each suspension system is custom fit to the scabbard, and is adjustable for preference to the angle the wearer prefers. The pattern work in the leather can incur extra charge, but simple work is included in the base price. Unfortunately at this time, we do not offer a universal suspension system that can move from sword to sword.

Q: What is the decor, exactly?
A: These are decoration pieces that generally fit perfectly on most pommels, and help the scabbard tie in to match. These are very unique pieces, and really help make the sword and scabbard look so much better. Much like the traditional grip, it helps the sword gain a 'richer' look.

Q: How long will my order take?
A: Of course, this generally depends on the current volume of orders already in the shop. We generally like to say two weeks after receiving your sword. But often it takes less time, sometimes longer with multi-part orders. We don't guarantee any of our turn-around times, and if it takes longer, then it takes longer. We always take the time to do it right, and we don't cut corners to meet a deadline.

Q: Can I make changes after my commission is started?
A: Yes you can, however, if you make a change after a particular project area of the sword is started, then you will be charged twice for that particular project area. For example, the scabbard leather is already cut to size and fitted to your scabbards unique shape. You will be notified if your change will incur extra charges. Changes also add to the turn-around time.

Q: Will you send me pictures?
A: Usually this isn't a problem upon request, and I generally take pictures of all my commissions anyways.
